Why isn’t the Sony Xperia 5 IV on the market? There are three causes for this

The Sony Xperia 1 IV is the fourth-generation version of Sony’s top-end smartphone, but it lacks one feature that the previous three generations of Xperia devices have.

That’s because, while having a budget option in the Sony Xperia 10 IV, there’s no middle ground: the Sony Xperia 5 III hasn’t been updated this year.

That’s a strange omission, because the Xperia 5 line usually offered a lot of the Xperia 1’s specifications to a somewhat smaller phone with a slightly lower price. But why is there no such handset this year?

When asked for an explanation, Sony refused, so we had no choice but to take matters into our own hands. We’ve come up with three possibilities; you can choose one.

The Xperia 5 was an odd middle child for a number of reasons

Perhaps the lack of a midway entry is the fault of the Xperia 1 IV and 10 IV.

The Xperia 5 has always been the uncomfortable middle kid in the family. It provides many of the top-end mobile’s capabilities to a smaller, less expensive device than the flagship, although it’s never been particularly small or inexpensive. You only have to choose the Xperia 10 for such a gadget.

It’s difficult to uncover sales data for the Xperia series, let alone particular models, but doesn’t the absence of an Xperia 5 IV speak for itself?

Perhaps Sony realised that the Xperia 1 and 10 were selling far more than the intermediate model, and opted to concentrate on those two versions.

Reason number two: the Xperia 5 III was released too recently

Perhaps the latest Sony Xperia 5 III is to blame.

“”Recent?” you say, we hear you say. Isn’t this phone from April 2021, more than a year ago?” It was, but it wasn’t released at the time. No, it wasn’t released until much later, and in the United States, it wasn’t available until January 2022.

If you’re a passionate Sony fan, you may have recently purchased the Sony Xperia 5 III; would you buy another one just a few months later? Especially if it simply includes minor spec changes and a few new features? Probably not; the money would be wasted.

Sony may have foreseen this potential problem and chosen to hold off on releasing the Xperia 5 IV this year.

Reason 3: Perhaps there is still one

Perhaps it’s our fault, and we’re getting ahead of ourselves: perhaps the Xperia 5 IV was never cancelled at all.

If you can remember back to the beginning of 2019, the Sony Xperia 5 was released roughly six months after the initial Xperia 1.

Because of the above, Sony may have decided to delay its middle child until later in the year, giving its phones their own focus and ensuring that the third- and fourth-generation Xperia 5 handsets don’t compete.
