Qualcomm has announced the latest generation of Snapdragon chipsets for this year’s premium and mid-range handsets. Today, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, which will be available in many devices in the next months. The former is the replacement of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, whereas the latter is the successor to the Snapdragon 778G.

Many smartphones will feature the two chipsets in the coming months. Vivo, ZTE, Oppo, Redmagic, Black Shark, iQoo, Honor, Lenovo, Xiaomi and Redmi, Nubia, Motorola, OnePlus, Realme, and Asus ROG are among of the businesses we expect to debut handsets using the latest chipsets.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipsets are described in detail below.

Features of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1

In terms of GPU and CPU performance, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor outperforms its predecessor by 10%. The Elite Gaming platform is included with the chipset. HDR gaming with 10-bit colour depth is possible on devices equipped with the chipset.

Smartphones with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor can record 8K HDR video. It can also capture a 64MP still image while simultaneously recording video.

The chipsets also have enhanced connectivity features such as dual 5G sim compatibility and speeds of up to 10 Gbps on 5G sub-6 and mmWave bands.

While performance has improved, the chipset also promises a 30% increase in power efficiency and a 30% decrease in GPU power. This is in comparison to the previous generation flagships, such as the Xiaomi 12 Pro and the Vivo X80 Pro, which were also recently released. The chipset also outperforms the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 by 20% in terms of performance per watt.

According to Qualcomm, devices featuring the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 will be available in Q3 2022.

Features of the Snapdragon 7 Generation 1

Many of the capabilities that were available on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will now be available on more chipsets in the 7, 6, and 4 series, according to Qualcomm’s current strategy. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset maintains its position as the first chipset designed particularly for mobile gaming.

The chipset renders graphics 20 percent faster than the previous iteration, the Snapdragon 778G. The biggest improvement we can expect from the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 in mid-range phones is a higher display resolution. This is due to the addition of support for QuadHD+ displays by the company.

The processor can accommodate 200MP picture sensors as well as 4K HDR video capture when it comes to image processing. Dual 5G compatibility and HDR gaming are included, just like the flagship chipset. The chipset provides a 30% performance boost over its predecessor.
