More strength?

We may have a better sense of what to expect from the Motorola Razr 2022, the third edition of the clamshell foldable that debuted in 2019 — and this fresh leak comes from a Motorola executive.

Qualcomm just announced the Snapdragon Gen 8+ Gen 1 mobile CPU, and Motorola general manager Shen Jin used Weibo to promote the new chip (via Notebookcheck). According to the post text, the image contains a hidden Easter egg.

If you look closely enough, you can see the form of a foldable phone at the bottom of the image — is this the Easter egg that’s being mentioned? The suggestion is that the most recent CPU could make an appearance.

Everything with chips

Even given the source’s quality and reputation, we wouldn’t take this as confirmation just yet. The most recent Motorola Razr 2020 we saw came with a mid-range Snapdragon 765G processor, so it would be a big upgrade if Motorola included the best chipset available in this new iteration.

However, there have been rumours that the 2022 version of the foldable will come with additional storage and a better camera — so perhaps a processing upgrade is also in the works.

We shouldn’t have to wait long to learn more. While there haven’t been any concrete rumours regarding a release date, we expect the next Razr to arrive in the second half of 2022 — Motorola didn’t update this phone last year, so a refresh is long overdue.

Motorola may be ready to compete with Samsung

Aside from the Motorola Razr, two more notable foldable phones are set to debut in 2022: the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 will have the same clamshell design as the Razr.

If the speculations we’ve heard so far are correct, the Motorola Razr 2022 will be able to compete with the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in almost every measure that matters. The new Razr will be a premium phone with increased performance and cameras, as well as other changes that we anticipate.

For AI-related operations, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor is said to deliver up to 10% faster CPU performance, 10% faster GPU clock speeds, and 20% greater battery efficiency. When compared to the flagship chip featured in phones like the Galaxy S22 Ultra, this is a significant difference.

All of these premium features, of course, come at a price: the Motorola Razr 2022’s pricing will be a critical factor in its sales success. In comparison, the 2020 edition of the phone cost $1,399 / £1,399 when it was first released.

Even if the iPhone 14 is the most powerful phone ever, it is insufficient.
