IBM claims that by 2025, it will have thousands of quantum computers for sale

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has stated that thousands of quantum computers will be available for purchase within the next three years.

Krishna told Reuters ahead of the Think conference that machines expected to hit the market in 2025 will have more than 4,000 qubits of computational capacity. To put things in context, today’s devices have 127 qubits.

Krishna went on to say that such a gadget would be able to optimise truck fleet routing or improve financial risk modelling, among other things. He claims that tackling these problems with ordinary computer gear would necessitate a supercomputer “the size of this planet.”

Krishna also talked about how the company’s Watson AI was over-hyped, and how it delivered results in healthcare and other industries a little slower than expected.

He went on to say that building quantum computers is more challenging than developing artificial intelligence (AI). “We may have exaggerated some things,” Krishna admitted. “This time, we’re trying to stay on the straight and narrow.”

IBM presented a research paper in late January 2022 explaining how difficult it was to construct quantum computing equipment. The paper presents a strategy for expanding the quantum power applications available.

“Quantum computers hold promise for chemical and physical system simulations,” IBM wrote in the report, “but the restricted capabilities of today’s quantum processors allow only tiny, and frequently approximate, simulations.”

The business claims that the solution is to merge classical and quantum computing capability through a process known as “entanglement forging.” If successful, the system has the potential to double the number of quantum computations available.

Quantum technology is still in its infancy, but it has enormous potential. Quantum computing, in layman’s terms, goes beyond binary processing (where everything is either a one or a zero) and allows for states in the middle, making the final computer more powerful.

These are the greatest workstations available right now, even if they aren’t quantum.
