We already know the Google Pixel 6a is coming, and a new leak implies it may arrive soon: production on the mid-range phone has reportedly begun, which means we won’t have to wait long to see it.

This information comes from well-known tipster Mukul Sharma, who claims that production has begun in Asia and that a launch is “imminent” – a forecast that aligns with other Google Pixel 6a reports.

The Google Pixel 6a is most likely to debut during the Google IO 2022 conference, which begins on May 11. Although the conference is purportedly a software showcase, it has previously been used to announce new hardware.

Previous data breaches

The Google Pixel 5a was first announced on August 17, 2021, however it appears that the variation will arrive sooner this year. Due to a worldwide chip scarcity, the Pixel 5a was only available in the United States and Japan.

The name of the incoming Pixel 6a has been released by Google, and we expect it to follow in the footsteps of the Pixel 6 from last year: the design will be similar, and the phone will be powered by the same Tensor processor.

Unofficial leaked renders have given us a better sense of what to expect in terms of the Google Pixel 6a’s design – while nothing has been confirmed.

This may be Google’s biggest hit ever

While Google hasn’t announced the exact number of Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro units sold, company executives have stated that the latest Pixels are the fastest-selling phones in the Pixel series to date.

If you’re Google, this is good news, and the Pixel 6a is well-positioned to capitalise on that success. According to what we’ve heard so far, the phone will retain many of the best features of the Pixel 6 while being packaged in a more cheap manner.

While the Pixel 5a’s limited availability hurt its prospects of making a big splash in the consumer market, cheaper versions of the Pixel flagships have always been popular, dating back to the Google Pixel 3a in 2019.

Now it’s up to the Pixel 6a to take against the iPhone SE (2022), and we believe it stands a strong chance. Pricing will be critical, as it always is: the Pixel 5a went on sale for $449 (about £365 or AU$635).

Here’s all we know so far about the Google Pixel 6a.
