After all, the Google Pixel Fold may not pose a threat to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

The release of Google’s first foldable device could be postponed.

For a time, it appeared that Samsung’s upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 would face stiff competition from Google’s Pixel Fold, but that no longer appears to be the case.

Google has reportedly postponed the introduction of the Pixel Fold, according to The Elec(opens in new tab). According to the article, the company had planned to introduce it in the fourth quarter of this year, so the delay presumably implies it won’t arrive until 2023.

According to the report, the delay is due to the Pixel Fold “not being as complete as Google wishes,” according to “people familiar with the situation.”

It’s unclear what they mean by that, but given that a foldable phone is effectively a new product category with its own set of challenges — most notably the folding screen and the hinge – it’s likely that some components of the gadget aren’t as polished as Google would want.

Samsung’s current foldable market lead is due in part to its willingness to release unpolished products in the first couple of generations, but it appears that Google isn’t willing to do so, and with more competition than Samsung faced when it first entered the market, that’s probably a wise decision.

Even said, this is just one source reporting that the Google Pixel Fold has been delayed, so there’s still a chance that it will be released this year.

Analysis: This was a foregone conclusion for us

While we’d take this claim of a delay with a grain of salt, it’s extremely plausible; in fact, it’s something we anticipated only a few weeks ago.

During Google IO 2022, the company appeared to disclose or tease nearly everything it has planned for the year, including far-off products like the Google Pixel 7. In fact, the business gave a sneak peek at the Pixel Tablet, which won’t be available until 2023.

The Pixel Fold, on the other hand, was nowhere to be found, leading to the obvious conclusion that this foldable phone is still a long way off. If you’re looking for a foldable this year, Samsung’s future devices are likely to be your best bet.
